A moment of balance
This Friday, 20 March, we reach the spring equinox: the moment winter loosens its grip and spring officially begins.
The word equinox comes from Latin and means “equal night.” It refers to the point in the year when day and night stand in near balance, before the days begin stretching longer and the energy of the season turns outward again. There is something deeply comforting in that balance. Nature does not rush. It simply shifts. And then everything begins again.
Why this day mattered to our ancestors
For our ancestors, this was never just an astronomical event. It was a threshold. A pause between what had been and what was about to begin. After the hardship and darkness of winter, the equinox marked the return of light, movement, fertility, and hope.
